Koda and Officer Brian Todd: Koda was born in France on May 12 2006. He received training in France and was purchased by Alderhorst International and imported to the United States. In March of 2008 Midvale Police went to Alderhorst and selected Koda as our new Police Service Dog. Officer Gerry Wayne continued Koda’s training. In April of 2009 Officer Wayne and Koda were at the (Utah Police Officers Association) U.P.O.A. K9 trials. Officer Wayne and Koda took 4th Place in the Apprehensions sections of the competition. This is for all K9 dogs through out the state of Utah. In June 2009 Officer Wayne received another assignment. Officer Brian Todd was selected to be Koda’s new partner. In July 2009 Officer Todd and Koda attended and obtained Utah State certification for Narcotics Detection through P.O.S.T. (Peace Officers Standards and Training). In October 2009 Officer Todd and Koda attended and obtained certification in the Patrol Dog Certification Class through P.O.S.T. Shortly after finishing training and starting patrol work a tragedy occurred. January 01, 2010. Officer Todd and Koda had responded on a Burglary in progress call. Shortly after officers had arrived on scene one of the suspects fled the area. Officer Todd and Koda began a track of the fleeing burglar. The suspect was located a few houses away hiding behind a deck. The Suspect saw Officers Todd and Koda and took off again. Koda was released and caught up with the Suspect. The Suspect pulled a handgun and fired three shots killing Koda. The Suspect then turned his attention to Officer Todd and fired additional shots towards the Officer. Officer Todd returned fire and stopped the Suspects aggressive actions. Koda made the ultimate sacrifice and saved the life of Officer Todd that fateful evening.
